New York Spotlight

Hello from CSM NYC!

A lot of cool things have been happening in our city since summer started. In April we hired on our new Associate Director, Joelle Miller.  She is a Minneapolis native, and hosted in New York City while she was in college. Being someone who was more experienced in international missions, hosting with CSM opened her eyes to the need for gospel restoration domestically. Her passion for Biblical justice and seeing the inner city transformed by the gospel cultivated a desire to work for CSM full time. Her hope is that individuals would see Jesus' command to "love as I have loved you” and live that out with grace and truth towards others. We’re excited to have her aboard!

During our training weeks in the beginning of May, we had a great time connecting with our summer hosts (or, "interns"). Not only did we enjoy being able to hang out as a staff during training, but we had a unique opportunity to partner with Cru, a college campus based ministry. A group of fifty college students from around the country were doing a summer-long mission trip to the Jersey Shore, so they came to New York City  toward the end of our staff training. While they were in the city, our hosts did prayer tours with them throughout Manhattan. It was a great opportunity for CSM to partner with another ministry that is also working to equip students to become more mission-oriented. We were so thrilled to build connections with other believers and expose more college students to the reality and needs of our city.

We have also been so encouraged by the way God has showed Himself to our high school groups--specifically through their service day at  one of our ministry partners, East New York Farms. This site has community-run farmers markets that provide fresh and affordable produce for the surrounding neighborhoods. They also provide support to a growing network of over fifty gardeners who represent over a dozen community gardens throughout East New York.

One of our group leaders from this past week had adopted a little girl from China right before coming on his CSM trip. When he arrived in New York, his serving group was assigned to East New York Farms. While he was there, he met one of the women who is on staff with the site and began asking her questions about her life and ministry. He found out that not only was she Chinese, but that she was from the exact town that his daughter was recently adopted from. With tear-filled eyes, he asked her questions about the town and what life is like there. He was blown away by the connection they made. He spent some time in praying over her after serving. Not only was it an encouragement to the youth leader after bringing a new baby girl into his family, but it was a way for the staff at our ministry partners to connect with our serving groups on a deeper level.

These are just some of the many stories in which we’ve seen God’s sovereignty shine through so far this summer. We are excited for more to come in 2018!

Blessings, CJ & Joelle CSM New York
